Non-Histone Proteins Containing the Histone Fold Motif

Using modern profile searching methods, we have extended and revised the collection of eukaryotic histone fold-containing sequences. The use of the powerful profile search method PSI-BLAST vastly improves the ability to detect subtle members of the histone fold family. PSI-BLAST searches were performed on a non-redundant version of the NCBI protein database, using yeast and human core histone folds as query sequences.

Two sources containing the sequences of these histone fold proteins are available:

  • Complete sequence of each protein (not including Archaeal histones)
A non-redundant set of histone fold protein sequences, in FASTA format. The definition lines associated with each sequence -- containing identifiers, sequence description, and species of origin -- are listed above the sequence. In each definition line the gi number is linked to its Entrez Protein record, which can include relevant links to nucleotide, taxonomy, PubMed references, structure, and other data.

  • Archaeal histone sequences are available at a database maintained by Drs. John N. Reeve and Kathleen Sandman at Ohio State University.
